Montross Christian who has been ranked in the top ten nationally and is currently ranked 21 faced off against Roman Catholic of Philadephis Saturday afternoon the 10 th at Prime Time in Philadephia.
Montross has a trio of highly regarded sophomores, two of whom are listed in the top 15 nationally in the class of 2009 so this was a good game for some advance scouting of up and coming national prospects.
Another top sophomore for Montross, is Tristan Spurlock, who at 6’6 gives a nice look as a shooter, handler with size and smoothness who sets up high and either drives or shoots from deep. He showed he is a proficient 3 point shooter and alert passer. I do think he should have hustled back on defense better, especially against the streaking fast break offense of Roman Catholic which began to be big part of their offensive strategy after the early part of the game.
Shane Walker, a 6’9 senior center for Montross, is quick and had good hands for effectiveness in the blocks and found spots for nice dunks or a couple of quick jumpers. He is committed to play for national powerhouse Maryland of the Atantic Coast Conference as is his teammate on Montross senior guard Adrien Bowie.
Terrell Vinson, the mostly highly touted of the sophomores, is listed as high as top 5 in the country in the class of 2009, but he didn’t play as many minutes and I’m not sure if he was in foul trouble. He did look quick. He had 9 points and 9 rebounds in limited action and shot 4 of 4 from the field. For Montrose, Troy Brewer a 6’5 shooting guard, had the best overall game, hitting 5 three point shots with great form and release mostly with a defender draped on him, and at 6’5 his height helps him get looks but it was his quickness and nice release on his jumper that counted here.
Montross, who had been ranked in the top ten nationally with only 1 loss going into this game, looked like they would win rather easily in the early going, when their offense quickly got on a roll for a opening run to where they had built a quick 15 point lead in the early going. But Roman Catholic, led by two brother combinations of seniors Bradley and Brian Wanamaker, and juniors Will and Wes Kirland who are both listed as 6’4, rallied with pressure defense and sound execution on offense. Most of the offense went thru highly regarded Bradley Wanamaker, who is signed with Pittsburgh and Wanamaker had 27 points for the game. He is a leader on the court, especially on offense, and shows that he can handle the ball in heavy traffic, have just about everything on offense run thru him, leap for jams, split the defense on drives, and drill the deep three. There was no let up in his style or the style of the team for Roman Catholic who had a surprise comeback overtime victory.
The early 15 point lead was the calm before the storm as from that point Roman Catholic went into effective pressure defense and didn’t let up the rest of the game. Montross lost for only the second time this season.
Adrien Bowie, showed he is a sharpshooter who comes to play for Montross and he should fitl in well at national powerhouse Maryland in college who have traditionally emphasized the play of guards. He had 15 points and 5 assists.
This game featured excellent shooting on both sides. The Kirkland brothers, only juniors, have potential as big time shooters for Roman Catholic. The final score was 69-61 in overtime in favor of Roman Catholic for the upset victory over the national powerhouse Montross.
